It is necessary to observe the following procedure for test:

— launch the engine and establish wheels in situation for the rectilinear movement, note the provision of a steering wheel (on a rim);

— slowly turning a steering wheel from left to right, note the provision of a steering wheel at the moment when wheels begin to turn;

— if the side play of a steering wheel exceeds 30 mm, check existence of a side play in hinges (fig. 7.24);

— replace if necessary worn-out details; if the side play remains, check a side play of the steering mechanism: establish wheels in situation for the rectilinear movement and switch off the engine; apply to a steering wheel the moment of 5 N · m; the side play of the steering mechanism should not exceed 10 mm (fig. 7.25);

— if the side play of the steering mechanism exceeds 10 mm, check and adjust a preliminary tightness on the leading gear wheel.
